Tuesday, June 24 2003 15:01 Hrs (IST)
Madurai: Senior Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader M K Azhagiri was on June 24 produced
before a Judicial Magistrate in connection with the recent "copy right" case.
Police, who had seized more than 4037 Video and audio cassettes during a raid at his shop, charged
Azhagiri and the shop manager Damodaran under "Copy right act" on June 16.
The Magistrate Indhirani remanded Azhagiri till July 7.
Azhagiri, who has already been arrested in connection with the murder of former minister T Kiruttinan,
was brought from Tiruchirappalli central prison for production before the Magistrate. There was some
commotion due to some advocates and some DMK members wanting to get into the court hall, which
police did not permit.
There was some tension in the court as Azhagiri refused to alight from the police van as he was irritated
by the policeman nudging him with the gun he was carrying. The matter was sorted out later.
The Magistrate also ordered that all those were without uniform, including police in mufti, and the press
to go out of the court hall. However, the Central Intelligence Department (CID) police remained inside
the court hall, violating the magistrate order.
Meanwhile, another judicial magistrate Vanitha, taking up a petition filed on behalf of Azhagiri by his
advocate, directed that police refrain from handcuffing Azhagiri.
