Tuesday, June 24 2003 10:26 Hrs (IST)

Vaibhavwadi: The death toll in June 22 mishap on the Konkan Railway (KR) involving the Karwar- Mumbai holiday special, has risen to 51 with the recovery of 17 more bodies from the mangled coaches even as rescue operations were still on amidst heavy downpour.

Sixty injured persons have been admitted to various hospitals at Oros, Ratnagiri, Kankavli and Goa, KR sources said on June 24. Of the injured, 15 are serious.

A contingent of Army comprising 150 personnel is engaged in rescue operations which have been hampered due to incessant rains, officials said.

Badly mangled coaches, have been lifted with the help of cranes and shifted to tunnel No 65, but the train's engine and a bogey are still trapped under the debris.

Most passengers have been rescued and chances of more persons trapped inside is remote, the officials added.
