'CAS could go the VAT way if not consumer-friendly'

New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president M Venkaiah Naidu on June 25 said the Conditional
Access System (CAS), proposed to be implemented from July 15 next, could meet the same fate as
Value Added Tax (VAT) if it is not consumer-friendly.
"The touchstone for any such measure is how far it is acceptable to the people and whether people
have to pay less or more than they are currently paying," Naidu told reporters.
Naidu made the remarks when asked whether CAS could turn out to be "another onion" for BJP in Delhi
in the coming Assembly polls.
Delhi BJP chief Madan Lal Khurana had recently written to Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee
requesting to postpone the move to implement CAS till all "misgivings" were cleared. He also met
Venkaiah Naidu reportedly asking him to play a role in shelving the proposal in the interest of
consumers.
