3 Africans held in fake travellers cheque racket

Ahmedabad: Kutch district police ton June 25 officially arrested three African citizens, who were detained
on June 24 over alleged charges of attempting to encash 'fake' travellers' cheques in several banks.
Police was also investigating fresh complaints that some of the accused foreigners had tried to
encash 'fake' travellers' cheques worth Rs 1.25 lakh in Jamnagar and Rajkot districts also, official
sources said.
"We have just got information about a cheque of Rs 1.25 lakh that they tried to encash in Jamnagar and
made a similar attempt in Rajkot. More details are awaited", a top official of the district police said,
adding that the Africans were officially arrested.
District police had, in a pre-dawn operation on June 24, arrested three Malaysians and detained three
Africans from a hotel in Gandhidham town of the district for stealing travellers and regular cheques as
also trying to encash them.
Since investigation proved that some of them had entered the country using fake passports, details from
airports across the country have been sought, he said.
The official had, earlier said that some of the accused were also wanted in connection with the same
crime in Chennai and some parts of the country as they had been travelling since past four months.
The fraud came to light after they attempted to encash 'fake' travellers' cheques worth Rs 16,000 of
American Express Bank at the Development Credit Bank, Bhuj.
Involvement of some Indians in Delhi in the fraud is also being investigated, the official added.
