Guntur: Two naxals, including a commander of outlawed Janasakthi group (CPI-ML), were shot dead by the police in an encounter at Tallapalli village near Macherla town in the district on June 25.

Superintendent of Police, A Ravi Shankar said that the two naxals, Subhani alias R K, the commander and Koteswara Rao, had summoned about 10 rice millers and rich farmers to the outskirts of the village for extorting money.

While negotiations were going on, a police party, which was combing the area, reached the place on getting a tip-off, he said.

On seeing the police, the naxals fired indiscriminately injuring a farmer, the SP said adding, the police retaliated killing the two naxals.

The police also recovered a country made gun (tapancha), a service revolver, a landmine and a kit bag from the spot, Ravi Shankar added.
