Naidu to speak to Centre again on water dispute
Thursday, June 26 2003 15:15 Hrs (IST)
Hyderabad: Amidst intensifying war of words with neighbouring Karnataka over controversial Paragodu
project, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is preparing to write yet another letter to
the Centre drawing its attention to instances of 'blatant violation' of inter-state agreements by the upper
riparian Karnataka.
Naidu would lodge 'strong protest' over the way the Central Water Commission (CWC) was according
permission to Karnataka's projects though they were being taken up in violation of inter-state
agreements, official sources said.
The Chief Minister will also raise objections over inclusion of AP's projects like Telugu Ganga, Handri
Neva and Galeru Nagari in the agenda of the deferred meeting of CWC, now scheduled to be held in
Delhi on June 27.
Naidu had on June 25 called up Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani and expressed unhappiness over the
manner in which CWC was handling the dispute over Paragodu project, across Chitravathi river in Kolar
district, and upper Tunga projects being taken up by the neighbouring state.
"The Deputy Prime Minister had assured me that he will instruct CWC to handle the issues in an
impartial manner", Naidu said.
Paragodu project has emerged as yet another irritant in the long history of bitter river water disputes
between the two riparian states.
The lower riparian AP has been demanding stoppage of works on the project as it violated inter-state
agreements and, if completed, would totally block water flow to backward Anantapur and Cuddapah
districts.
