At least 31 feared dead in Bangladesh floods
Friday, June 27 2003 01:39 Hrs (IST)
Dhaka: At least 31 people, including two minors, were feared killed in landslides and floods triggered by
incessant rainfall in two districts of southern Bangladesh, media reports said on June 27.
Khagrachari hill district in south eastern Bangladesh, the worst hit, reported 20 deaths due to landslides
and many were still feared trapped under the debris, local media reported.
At least two minors were feared killed in flash floods in Naokhali district, the reports said.
Two persons, including a university teacher, were drowned in the port city of Chittagong after rains
lashed the city, while five deaths were reported from the nearby town of Mirersharai.
Communication lines between Chittagong and three hill districts of Khagrachari, Rangmati and
Bandarban remained snapped due to landslides and incessant rains, reports said.
Flash flood washed away gravel from rail tracks on the Dhaka-Chittagong route leading to disruption of
train services for over five hours on June 26.
Officials said that heavy rainfall in the hill districts has resulted in a significant rise in the water level in
several rivers, with some bursting their banks.
Yesterday's (June 26) toll was the highest recorded due to landslide in a day, reports said.
The rainfall also affected activities at the Chittagong port and loading and unloading of 16 vessels
remained suspended.
