Venkaiah rejects VHP's demand to come out of NDA
Friday, June 27 2003 15:28 Hrs (IST)
Chennai: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on June 27 rejected the Vishwa Hindu Parishad's (VHP)
demand that the party come out of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the government, if it was
unable to bring a legislation to build a Ram temple at the disputed site at Ayodhya.
The BJP president M Venkaiah Naidu told a press conference on June 27 that the VHP's demand was
totally unacceptable to the party.
Though the party stood for a temple for Lord Ram at his birthplace at Ayodhya, the VHP's demand for a
legislation for that was not possible, he said.
He said the NDA government was governed by the agenda for national governance and the BJP would
not thrust its ideas on its coalition partners. "We are running a coalition and believe in coalition dharma,"
he said.
He said he had conveyed this to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) leaders, whom he met
recently.
Welcoming the initiative taken up by the Seer of the Kanchi Mutt Sri Jayendra Saraswathi for a solution
to the Ayodhya tangle, he said the Centre would intervene at an appropriate time. It would involve
everybody, including the VHP, in the talks for a solution to the issue, he said.
Describing reports that the BJP was in favour of preponing the Lok Sabha polls as "speculative", he said
the party wanted the polls to be held as schedule next year.
