Musharraf's yet another formula on Kashmir
Friday, June 27 2003 03:56 Hrs (IST)
Washington: After suggesting a West Asia style peace roadmap on Kashmir, Pakistan President Pervez
Musharraf has outlined a four-stage approach to resolve the issue, saying any search for immediate
solution to the problem would be rejected by extremists in both India and Pakistan.
His suggestion for a West Asia type peace roadmap on Kashmir involving US has already been rejected
by India.
After a meeting with members of Senate Foreign Relations Committee at the Capitol Hill where he talked
about the Kashmir problem and situation in Afghanistan and Iraq, Musharraf told reporters "we have
adopted a step-by-step approach.
"First the two sides: Pakistan and India -- have to start talking to each other to hold dialogue, the stage
two - accepting the centrality of the Kashmir dispute to be resolved for better relations between India
and Pakistan, stage three being the elimination of whatever is unacceptable to Pakistan, India and the
people of Kashmir and the stage four - trying to hit the solution that is win-win for Pakistan, India and the
people of Kashmir," he said.
Musharraf said the problem has been that "we straightaway start talking of the solution of the Kashmir
dispute.
"If we talk of solution now, we will not make any progress. So, go step-by -step, finally cross the bridge
when you come to the bridge and that is hit for a solution when you reach a stage, where a solution is
possible and the people of the countries can be taken along."
He said, "When we talk of solution there are such contentious solutions, which are not acceptable to
either side, then there are extremists in every country, who will not accept any flexibility, any
accommodation being shown by either side."
