Washington: Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf has said he will pave the way for functional
Democracy in his country, and added the next general elections would be held after five years. "It would
be a multi-party election," he said.
In an interview with 'The Washington Post', the President, who is also the Chief of Army Staff, claimed
that currently a Democratic government was operating in his country. "A Democratic government is in
place in Pakistan as a result of elections held October last year," he said.
The President said Pakistan witnessed an era of dysfunctional Democracy during 1990s when as many
as four Prime Ministers were dismissed and many Presidents, Army Chiefs and Chief Justices were
unceremoniously ousted.
Defending his policy of announcing Constitutional amendments in the form of Legal Framework Order
(LFO), he said he introduced the amendments for moving toward functional Democracy. "The
Constitutional amendments were introduced in accordance with ethos and ground realities of Pakistan to
ensure that Democracy does not get derailed again," he added.
