New Delhi: A little known social Muslim organisation in India offered a trade-off to the government saying it would forfeit its claim on a disputed land in Ayodhya, provided it was given equal benefits provided to lower caste Hindus.

"The central government and the President should interfere in the issue. Taking care of the sentiments of both the religions, they should solve the matter in such a way that the disputed land in Ayodhya should be given to the supporters of Ram Janmabhoomi so that they can construct a temple here freely. In lieu of this, let the religious ban on Muslims be lifted and like other Hindus, Sikhs and Buddhists, they be included in low caste categories," M Ejaz Ali, president of All India United Muslim Morcha told reporters in New Delhi.

The country's Supreme Court has banned permanent structure on the site where now stands a makeshift temple dedicated to Lord Ram. Ayodhya has been a flashpoint for religious tensions in the country since Hindu zealots razed to ground the Babri mosque there in 1992 saying it was built on the birthplace of Lord Ram. The demolition sparked off one of the country's worst religious riots killing over 3,000 people. v Proposals by various Hindu and Muslim seers are on the pipeline. Hindu pontiff Shankaracharya of Kanchi Jayendra Saraswati has offered an out-of-court settlement with Muslims on the Ayodhya tangle. Last week, the pontiff submitted a proposal to the All India Muslim Personal Law Board AIMPLB), which it is due to consider on July 6.

Reports say the proposals include allowing construction of a temple at the site and reconstruction of the mosque some distance away with guarantees that Hindus would forsake claims to two more disputed sites in Kashi and Mathura.

However, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) ruled out allowing reconstruction of the Babri mosque at or in proximity to the periphery of the disputed site. Some Muslim leaders have rejected outright any suggestion to relocate the Babri mosque.
