BDR agrees to flush out ultras from Bangladesh
Monday, June 30 2003 18:01 Hrs (IST)
Silchar (Assam): The Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) have agreed to begin combing operations in Bangladesh
to flush out North East insurgents from their camps and rescue two abducted persons, official sources
said.
This was decided at a flag meeting between the Border Security Force (BSF) and BDR at Karimganj in
South Assam on June 29, the sources said.
The BSF told the BDR in clear terms that camps of militant outfits in the jungles of Bangladesh had to be
destroyed, the sources said.
Denying knowledge of any such camp in Bangladesh soil, the BDR however agreed to carry out
combing operations on such camps, if any, along the Indian border.
The Bangladesh police had recently arrested 35 suspected militants from Sylhet district of that country,
the BDR informed the flag meeting.
Both the BSF and BDR also agreed to work in tandem to prevent smuggling and border crimes.
The meeting was attended by BSF deputy inspector general (DIG) Cachar circle, S I Khan and top BDR
officials, the sources added.
Shyamlal Gupta, manager of Promodnagar tea estate was kidnapped by the National Liberation Front of
Tripura (NLFT) ultras from Karimganj district on June 17 and businessman Bidhan Das on May 30 and
were reportedly taken to Bangladesh.
