75 pc seats must be filled through CET: HC
Monday, June 30 2003 19:44 Hrs (IST)
Bangalore: Karnataka High Court on June 30 passed an interim order stipulating that 75 per cent of the
seats in unaided non-minority professional colleges be filled up through the Common Entrance Test
(CET) conducted by government.
The remaining 25 per cent of seats are to be filled up by the managements as per the rules laid in the
TMA Pai case (in the Supreme Court) by adopting "reasonable selection process", a Division Bench said
in its order passed only for 2003-2004.
The order by the bench comprising justice R V Raveendran and justice K L Manjunath came in a batch
of writ petitions filed by several managements challenging government rules, providing for filling up of 75
per cent of seats through CET and the rest under the management quota.
The government and a section of the managements are at loggerheads over the twin issues of
admission and fee structure after a Supreme Court verdict, which the managements said had given
them a free hand.
Karnataka government has refused to budge to the managements' demand to alter its seat sharing
formula and also constituted a regulatory committee to fix fees for engineering, medical and dental
colleges.
In its June 30 order, the judges also ordered that the fees for colleges should not exceed Rs 1.90 lakh
for medical, Rs 1.10 lakh for dental and Rs 36,000 for engineering courses.
Further hearing of the petitions was adjourned to August 18.
CET examinations attract thousands of students from outside Karnataka, apart from those within the
state. The CET examinations concluded recently and the results are also out.
