New Delhi: Taking suo motu cognisance of the acquittal of all the 21 accused in the Best Bakery
carnage in the wake of Godhra communal violence, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on
June 30 asked the Gujarat government to inform it of the steps it proposed to take against the acquittal
order.
"The chief secretary shall inform the Commission what steps, if any, the Gujarat government is
proposing to take against the order of acquittal," the Commission headed by Justice A S Anand said
after a full commission meeting on June 30.
"From the newspaper reports, it appears that all the accused in what came to be known as Best Bakery
case have been acquitted," the Commission observed seeking a copy of the judgement of the trial court
within a week.
In the first trial of post-Godhra communal violence related cases, all the 21 accused in the case were
acquitted by a fast track court for want of evidence on June 27.
The carnage took place on March 1, 2002 after widespread communal violence rocked the state
following Godhra carnage on February 27, wherein 59 Ram Sevaks were charred to death in a train.
