Set up Ministry for Rail Derailment, quips Congress
Wednesday, July 2 2003 22:37 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: Concerned over the frequent rail accidents, Congress sought to embarrass the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led coalition by suggesting the need to set up a separate Ministry for Rail Derailment, following the mishap at Warangal in Andhra Pradesh on July 2.

Party spokesman Anand Sharma told reporters that the "dismal record" of continuing train accidents has prompted the Congress to make the suggestion so that the aspects of rail safety and security were brought sharply in focus.

He said that the Congress would seek to know from the government during the Monsoon Session the outcome of various inquiries instituted in several train mishaps.

Asked whether the Congress would demand resignation of the Railway Minister following the spate of accidents, he said the record of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government showed that the Ministers sticking to their offices like "limpets" as their individual and collective conscience was not stirred.
