Train catches fire near Sonipat, passengers unhurt
Friday, July 4 2003 19:53 Hrs (IST)
Sonipat: Passengers on the Delhi-Panipat passenger EMU train had a miraculous escape on July 4
when fire broke out in a coach.
The fire was noticed when the train halted at Rathdhanna railway station, about eight kilometres from
Sonipat, causing panic among the passengers.
They immediately started getting down from the train and many sustained minor injuries as there were
no footboards outside the entrance gates of the bogies, witnesses said.
Almost all the bogies were overcrowded at the time.
Witnesses said two women became unconscious, but co-passengers revived them by offering water.
Railway staff and the passengers brought the fire under control after a few minutes. The cause of the
fire was not yet known, railway sources said.
On July 2, 21 people had died when the Secunderabad-bound Golconda Express jumped off a bridge in
Warangal in Andhra Pradesh.
