17 fresh cases of mid-day meal poisoning in K'taka
Saturday, July 5 2003 16:43 Hrs (IST)

Bangalore: In fresh cases, 17 school children fell ill on July 5 after eating food provided under state government's ambitious mid-day meal scheme at Kuradagi village in Gadag district, police said.

The children complained of dysentery and vomiting in a suspected food poisoning after partaking of the food served under "Akshara Dasoha" scheme, police said.

Sixteen of them were taken to Kuradagi village hospital, and the remaining one to Gadag hospital, they said.

Ever since the scheme was extended to the entire state from July 1, over 600 school children took ill after eating the midday meals in Dharwad, Gadag and Mandya schools.

The government has already ordered an enquiry into the Gadag incident, which involved 234 children earlier this week.
