Shekhawat calls for comprehensive electoral reforms
Saturday, July 5 2003 10:38 Hrs (IST)

Hyderabad: Disfavouring frequent elections to Parliament and Assemblies, Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat on July 4 called for comprehensive electoral reforms to establish primacy of value-based politics.

"Unless we stop this practice of going in for elections too frequently and cut down poll expenditures, Democracy will continue to come under cloud," he said.

Shekhawat, who is on a maiden visit to the city after assuming the charge, was replying to felicitation at a civic reception in Hyderabad night.

Decrying the growing influence of money power in elections, the Vice-President said the present electoral system gave very little scope for intellectuals and experts to enter Legislative bodies.

"We need to ensure that elections are fought on the basis of ideology, characters and moral standards of the contenders," he said.
