My doors are still open for Muslims: Kanchi seer
Monday, July 7 2003 22:25 Hrs (IST)
Kancheepuram: Virtually giving up his efforts to resolve the Ayodhya tangle for now, Kanchi
Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswathi on July 7said the doors were, however, open to Muslims for
discussions but the All India Muslim Personal Law Board made it clear that it would not take the initiative
for a dialogue.
A day after the Board rejected his proposals as not being consistent with the honour and dignity of
Muslims, the Shankaracharya said in his Mutt that he has "completed" his task and would not "interfere" in the affairs of Kashi and Mathura.
"I have completed my task. I have no further plans but my doors shall always remain open, if the Muslims
want to have discussions on the issue," the Pontiff said.
However, in Lucknow, the AIMPLB member Sajjad Nomani said that the Board would not take any initiative for
starting a dialogue now and any fresh move would again have to come from the "other side".
"The Shankaracharya had initiated the (previous) move by coming over to meet the president of the
Board Rabey Hasan Nadvi and if he deems it proper, he may again make a fresh move with a proposal
which could pave the way of resolution of the dispute," he said.
Nomani, however, said any fresh formula would have to be "rational, reasonable, within the framework of
the Indian Constitution and in accordance with the past resolutions of the Board. He and another
member Zafaryab Jilani ruled out further talks on the rejected formula of the seer.
