NCM to meet Jaitley regarding the Best Bakery case
Monday, July 7 2003 14:13 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi: After expressing its "disappointment" over the judgement in the Best Bakery case, National
Commission for Minorities (NCM) is expected to meet Law Minister Arun Jaitley on July 8 to discuss the
case.
"The NCM convened an urgent meeting recently to express its concern over the judgement. We have
also sought appointments with Jaitley and the chief justice and we are meeting Jaitley tomorrow (July 8)
to discuss the case," NCM chairman Tarlochan Singh said.
The commission has also written a letter to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi seeking appointment
of a "lawyer of prominence to file an appeal so that the correct picture gets presented".
Recollecting the ghastly incident when a violent mob had killed 14 people and resorted to arson and
looting in Vadodara, the NCM said it was "startled" by the "comments" of the judge that "the investigation
had been shoddy and statement fabricated by the police to help the accused".
"Your state administration is accountable to you and if there has been a lacunae on their part to bring
the culprits to book, we would suggest that you should file an appeal against the judgement, instruct
your administration to present the correct facts and should ensure that eyewitnesses to the event
should not be cowed down or terrorised either not to make statements or to change their statements,"
the letter said.
