Putin vows to 'destroy' Chechen terrorists
Monday, July 7 2003 20:11 Hrs (IST)

Moscow: In the wake of the suicide bombings at a Moscow rock festival, Russian President Vladimir Putin on July 7 said the country will not succumb to terrorists and would destroy Chechen ultras who are part of the global terror network.

"Today, after the series of terrorist acts, we can talk about the fact that bandits, based in Chechnya, are not only linked with international terrorism, but are its integral part, maybe, the most dangerous part of the international terrorist web," Putin said at the Cabinet meeting in the Kremlin.

He vowed that like rest of the nations of the world, Russia will not succumb to the terrorists because the first step on the this path would mean the fragmentation of the state and the number of victims would multiply "ten, hundred and thousand times".

"The very form of the crime, the channels and sources of financing and supplies, and the main fact that these crimes are directed against peaceful civilian population, convince us that the bandits active in Chechnya are part of the terrorist network, which does not want the rebuilding of Chechnya," Putin underscored.

"It is useless to do any prophylactic work with these people, they must be plucked out of their hideouts in the cellars and caves and must be destroyed," Putin stated in his televised remarks ahead of the emergency meeting of his interior security team.
