Chennai: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on July 9 rejected Vishwa Hindu Parishad's (VHP) demand for a legislation for construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya, saying the issue was not on the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) agenda.

There was no basis for such a demand now, BJP president M Venkaiah Naidu told reporters at the airport in Chennai.

"I don't know why the VHP leaders are making the demand. BJP cannot force its idea on other constituents of NDA," Naidu, who is in Chennai to attend a meeting of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and its affiliates, said.

Construction of a Ram temple was not on the NDA agenda and there was no question of thrusting it on the allies, he said, adding BJP wanted the NDA government led by Atal Behari Vajpayee to complete its full term.

Describing as "unfortunate" the failure of Kanchi seer Jayendra Saraswati's formula to find a solution to Ayodhya dispute, Naidu said it was for religious leaders to reach a consensus on the issue or accept the court verdict.
