35 more children fall ill after taking food in K'taka
Wednesday, July 9 2003 10:14 Hrs (IST)

Bangalore: In yet another incident, 35 more school children took ill after consuming food supplied under the government's midday meal scheme at Gutlakur and Katarki in Koppal district of Northern Karnataka on July 8, police said.

All the children were admitted to the Koppal hospital and were out of danger, police said.

Senior district officials visited the hospital.

Over 600 school children fell ill in Gadag, Mandya and Dharwad districts last week after eating the food given to school children under the "Akshara Dasoha" scheme, aimed at providing nutritious meal and eliminating school dropouts.

Concerned over a series of incidents, the government has warned of taking strict disciplinary action against officials who do not take care to ensure quality food prepared under hygienic conditions.

Chief Minister S M Krishna had himself flown to Gadag and Dharwad districts last week to get a first hand knowledge of the situation.
