Srinagar: A senior activist of the ruling Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP) was shot dead by militants at Chancer village in Anantnag district of South Kashmir, police said.

Mohammad Abdullah, a retired police inspector, was fired at point-blank range by unidentified militants while he was on his way to the village in Kulgam area on July 8 night, police said.

He was rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Abdullah shot into prominence for firing at a top Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) commander Abdul Hamid Sheikh and his associates at Lal Bazar in Srinagar in 1988, sources said, adding his action earned him a promotion to the rank of a police inspector.
