Change of heart of Pak leadership needed: Mufti
Saturday, July 12 2003 16:44 Hrs (IST)
Jammu: Urging the Centre to adopt a cautious approach while dealing with Pakistan, Jammu and
Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed on July 12 said a change of heart of the leadership in
Islamabad was necessary for the success of Indo-Pak dialogue and normalisation of relations between
the two neighbours.
"It is good that the bus which left Delhi has reached Lahore with a clear message of peace and another
bus from Lahore reached Delhi breaking the ice in the Indo-Pak relations. But this is not enough," Mufti
said at a function, where appointment letters and monetary relief were distributed to the next of kin of
the 13 soldiers killed in fidayeen attack at Sunjwan Army camp on June 28.
"Unless there is change of hearts, in the leadership of Pakistan and mindset of the people of
neighbouring country, these peace initiatives would not yield much dividends," he said.
Pleading for cautious approach, Sayeed recalled that Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee had gone to
Lahore in a bus extending a hand of friendship but what India got in return was Kargil war".
Sayeed said while serious efforts to normalize relations with Pakistan have been made by Indian
leaders, these initiatives did not get adequate response from Islamabad.
"This time a hope has generated following positive response by Pakistan Prime Minister to yet another
bold initiative by Prime Minister Vajpayee," he added.
