AIMPLB mediators in touch with me: Kanchi seer
Saturday, July 12 2003 17:44 Hrs (IST)
Chennai: Kanchi seer Jayendra Saraswathi on July 12 said mediators from the All India Muslim Personal
Law Board (AIMPLB) were in touch with him on his initiative to resolve the Ayodhya tangle and he was
hopeful of an early solution.
"They are in touch with me," he told reporters when asked whether there was any follow-up after the
Board rejected his proposals.
Asserting that the Board's rejection of his proposal was "not a failure", he said the Board had "some
doubts regarding his mentioning of Kashi and Mathura" in his second letter.
He said he had only cautioned them and not issued any "veiled threat" to the Muslim
community.
The timing of his second letter, dated July 1, might have also caused some doubts
and "misunderstanding" among Board members, as it was after his meeting with Vishwa Hindu Parishad
(VHP) leaders.
The letter was ready by June 28 itself and there was some delay in typing it out. There was no pressure
from any quarters on his proposals, he said, adding there was no question of succumbing to any
pressure. "I will maintain my independent identity," he said.
The seer said court settlement could never solve the Ayodhya problem and only a negotiated settlement
could solve it.
