New Delhi: Strongly opposing any legislation to construct Ram Temple at Ayodhya, Congress on July 14 accused Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani of shifting "blame" on government's lack of numbers to get it passed.

"Advani is trying to throw ball on the Congress party on the Ayodhya issue. The fact of the matter is that the party stand has been very clearly consistent. We never thought of any scope for enacting any legislation on this issue," party spokesman S Jaipal Reddy told reporters.

The Deputy Prime Minister should know that Ayodhya issue did not figure in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) agenda, he said, adding he should realise that for all the "weaknesses" that the NDA partners faced the Sangh Parivar would like to "keep the issue boiling, either by talking of talks or by talking among themselves.

"BJP is cleverly and viciously pursuing its won parallel agenda independent of NDA through this kind of process," he said, adding the issue has been highlighted in a pattern.

"When Singhal criticises Prime Minister, it (Ayodhya) is the issue. When Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) meet this is the issue. When RSS and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) differ it is an issue," he said, adding there was a pattern in all these developments.

Asked whether the party would approve involvement of Kanchi seer in resolving Ayodhya dispute, he merely said like a political person having political rights, a religious man has religious rights. "We can only criticise when a political party involves such a person for political purposes."
