Srinagar: An Air Force official was killed and his two family members and a civilian driver injured in Pakistani shelling in Kargil sector of frontier region of Ladakh in Jammu and Kashmir, police sources said.

Sergeant Suresh died instantly and his wife, son and driver Throng Dorjay were injured when a shell hit their taxi at Chanigund on the periphery of Kargil town on July 14 night, they said.

Sources said the official was on a tour to the frontier region when he was caught in the shelling, which was witnessed in the area since early on July 14.

The sources said the taxi was extensively damaged in the shelling and the condition of the injured was stated to be serious.

Troops guarding the border also fired in retaliation and the shelling from both sides was continuing intermittently for the second successive day on July 15, the sources said, adding there was no immediate report of any casualty on the Pakistani side.

However, life in Kargil town was normal as shopkeepers opened their shops as usual. Schools were also open with full attendance and government and other semi-government offices functioned normally.
