Pallone backs move to track Pak steps on terrorism
Thursday, July 17 2003 18:50 Hrs (IST)

Washington: Prominent Congressman Frank Pallone has voiced support for a provision included in the Foreign Relations Authorisation Act that requires the US Department of State to send a report to Congress tracking Pakistan's actions regarding cross-border terrorism and non-proliferation.

The Pakistan provision in the Act requires the State Department to prepare and transmit to Congress a report that contains a description of how Pakistan has closed all known terrorist training camps operating in Pakistan and Pakistani-held Kashmir, and established serious and identifiable measures to prohibit the infiltration of Islamic extremists across the line of control (LoC) into India.

It also seeks the Department to see if Pakistan has ceased the transfer of weapons of mass destruction, including any associated technologies, to any third country or terrorist organisation.

Pallone, the co-founder of the Congressional India Caucus, said he believes such a report would allow Congress to determine whether or not Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf is following through on promises he made last month to President George W Bush in order to secure a $ 3 billion aid package from the US.

While Pallone believes the report is helpful, he said it should also include any efforts by the government in Pakistan to move closer or further away from Democracy.

The New Jersey Congressman has been critical of President Musharraf's lack of progress over the last year in moving towards Democracy in Pakistan.

"Although Pakistan's behaviour proves to be exactly the opposite of what the United States stands for, we are grateful for their support in combating global terrorism," Pallone said during a speech on the House floor. "To that end, the United States has provided ample economic, and much to my dismay, military funding to Pakistan with no strings attached."
