New Delhi: The Supreme Court on July 18 permitted former Karnataka police officer Abdul Karim, whose son was killed by dreaded forest brigand Veerappan, to appeal against a Mysore Terrorists and Disruptive Activities-Prevention-Act (TADA) court judgement acquitting several accused in cases pertaining to crimes committed by gang of the brigand.

A Bench comprising Justice Y K Sabharwal and Justice B N Agrawal gave this permission when counsel for Karim, C Badri Nath Babu, mentioned an application seeking to appeal against the September 29, 2001.

It was on the petition of Karim that the Supreme Court had stopped the governments of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka from dropping the cases against these accused to secure release of Kannada matinee idol Rajkumar from the clutches of Veerappan.

Karim, while seeking permission to file special leave petition against the Mysore TADA court verdict, had stated that as an unfortunate father of a police man Shakeel Ahmed, who was brutally killed by Veerappan, he was aggrieved by the lenient view taken by the TADA judge to award mild sentences to hardcore criminals.
