New Delhi: The Opposition is all set to put the government on the mat in Parliament over a range of
issues from Ayodhya to Conditional Access System (CAS) to Iraq in what is likely to be a stormy
monsoon session beginning July 21 ahead of the Assembly polls in five states.
With the Congress indicating its readiness for a secular alliance, the government may face flak from a
more united Opposition on the spate of train accidents, MIG series crashes, Best Bakery case, CAS,
controversial Taj corridor project, strike in Tamil Nadu, economic and agrarian issues during the month-
long session.
While the long-pending Women's Reservation Bill seeking to ensure 33 per cent reservation for women
in Lok Sabha and state Assemblies does not figure in the list prioritised by government, it expects to
take up nearly 50 Bills, including the Lokpal Bill, Election Laws Amendment, National Commission for
Children Bill, Fiscal Responsibility Bill and Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) Bill.
Not content with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ruling out a legislation on Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP)'s
demand for temple construction in Ayodhya, the issue is likely to come up in a big way during the
session with the Opposition seeking to corner the saffron party, caught between the Sangh Parivar
outfits and its allies.
Though government has said no to sending troops to Iraq, the Opposition is planning to demand a clear
statement from government that it would not deviate from this stand unless it was done under the aegis
of the UN and that it would not succumb to "lollipops" reportedly being offered by the United
States.
The Indo-Pak ties may also figure prominently during the session with the Opposition said to be holding
the view that government's position on it was vacillating and seeking to know the progress on the peace
initiatives.
