Israeli PM Ariel Sharon to visit India from Sep 9
Sunday, July 20 2003 13:11 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon will undertake a three-day visit to India from September 9 for talks with Indian leadership on a range of issues including fight against terrorism and defence co- operation.

New Delhi is attaching considerable significance to the visit which marks a new dimension in bilateral ties since the two countries established full fledged diplomatic relations more then a decade ago.

Sharon, who is coming at the invitation of Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee will hold wide ranging discussions on entire gamut of bilateral ties besides exchanging views on important regional and international developments.

The Middle East peace process and Iraq developments are expected to figure prominently during Vajpayee-Sharon parleys. Defence co-operation is likely to be the high point in the discussions.

New Delhi is keen on acquiring Phalcon airborne early warning system and anti-ballistic missiles from Israel.

United States, which had earlier opposed sale of AWACS to India, has now given its nod.
