Premji's threat: Task force to improve infrastructure
Monday, July 21 2003 22:17 Hrs (IST)
Bangalore: Stung by displeasure voiced by software major Wipro chairman Azim Premji, Karnataka Chief
Minister S M Krishna has formed a task force to improve infrastructure on Bangalore-Sarjapur road
where the company is located.
Within three days after Premji bitterly complained about poor infrastructure on Bangalore-Sarjapur road,
government on July 21 announced the task force headed by chief secretary B S Patil to initiate remedial
measures to improve the infrastructure, including easy flow of traffic and supply of regular power in the
area.
Responding to "displeasure" expressed by Premji over the sorry state of affairs, Krishna has in a letter
assured him that the task force would yield results within a few weeks, a release from the Chief Minister's
Secretariat said.
Krishna has directed the task force to take steps to improve the roads by filling up potholes, manage
traffic movement and ensure regular power supply in the Sarjapur area.
At the news conference to announce Wipro's quarter one results on July 18, Premji had slammed the
government and civic authorities for non-investment in the area, which had become "bottlenecked".
"Travelling on the Sarjapur road is quite a hazard and there have been multiple accidents," he said while
also complaining of rampant power cuts, saying it was a major embarrassment as power failed four times
in one hour meeting during discussions with clients.
Premji had also virtually hinted that they might have to hold a protest if the government did not improve
the road infrastructure and power situation.
