Washington: Deposed Iraqi President Saddam Hussein is alive and hiding somewhere inside the country, the top US administrator in Iraq, Paul Bremer has said.

According to 'The Nation', in an interview with NBC television channel Bremer said it would be better for Iraq if Saddam is, "either captured or eliminated physically". Paul is in Washington to brief US President George Bush on the latest situation in Iraq.

Stating that Saddam is still alive within his own country, Bremer said, "He will not be able to get public support for his return to power. Saddam does not enjoy public support in Iraq and that the deposed Iraqi leader would not be able to regain power."

Appealing to Americans to prepare themselves for a long stay in post-war Iraq, he said, "I do not know for how long the US-led mission will continue in the country."

About the attacks on US-led coalition forces, he said Saddam was not behind them. "Such attacks are being carried out by at least five-six groups which have professional skills for this," he added.

On the possibility of installing an autonomous Iraqi government, he said, "This depends on the making of a new Constitution by the Iraqis."
