Monday, July 21 2003 15:50 Hrs (IST)

Kabul: American troops have killed 24 Afghan fighters after they allegedly attacked a coalition convoy in Southern Afghanistan.

The unidentified attackers fired on the convoy late July 19 near the town of Spin Boldak that borders Pakistan. US military spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Douglas Lefforge said there were no casualties on the American side.

"The coalition forces drove through the kill zone, requested close air support and engaged the enemy forces, killing approximately five enemy and pursuing the remaining forces into the surrounding hills," he said in a statement.

AH-64 Apache attack helicopters had strafed the area, killing 17 to 19 more enemy fighters, he added. Lefforge said the attack took place near the US firebase at Spin Boldak.
