Norwegian envoy in Lanka; peace prospects brighten
Tuesday, July 22 2003 16:27 Hrs (IST)

Colombo: Sri Lanka's stalled peace bid with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) showed signs of revival, with a Norwegian special envoy Jon Westborg on July 22 holding talks with the rebel representatives in the island's North, as the Tigers have begun an internal discussion on the government's interim power-sharing proposals.

Westborg, after his arrival on July 22 in the rebel-held North, opened talks with the head of the political section of the LTTE, S P Thamilselvan in Kilinochchi, 330 kms North of Colombo, officials said.

He was expected to discuss possibilities of re-starting the peace talks following the government's proposal last week to establish a provisional administration.

Tigers have once again been informally sounded out before the formal proposals were taken to them by Westborg.
