Wednesday, July 23 2003 22:08 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: Government on July 23 decided to reconstitute the Law Commission which will begin functioning from September 1, 2003.

A proposal regarding this was approved by the Union Cabinet, an official spokesman told reporters after its meeting.

The reconstituted Commission with a three-year term will have a Chairman, three full-time members, one Member-Secretary and three or more part time members, the spokesman said.

The Chairman and three full-time members of the reconstituted Law Commission will be either serving or retired Judges of the Supreme Court or High Courts, legal experts, jurists and professors of Law in any Indian University, he said.

With the reconstitution of the Law Commission, the government will have the benefit of recommendations from specialised body on different aspects of law which are entrusted to the Commission for study and recommendations as per its terms of reference, he said.

The existing Commission in addition to the Chairman and Member Secretary comprises two members -- one full time and one part time.

The first Law Commission was set up in 1955.

Asked about the necessity of reconstituting the Commission, the spokesman said the step was taken as the term of the present Commission was coming to an end.
