Sangh equates Uniform Civil Code with Ayodhya
Friday, January 1 99 03:56 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi: Welcoming the Supreme Court observation on Uniform Civil Code, the Sangh Parivar on July
23 asked Opposition parties whether they would respect it in the same manner they wanted the saffron
outfits to abide by the judicial verdict on Ayodhya.
Describing the apex court's observations as "significant", Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS)
spokesman Ram Madhav said, "it will not be out of place here to remind some of those parties which
don't tire in pontificating day in and day out to organisations like Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) about the
need to respect the apex court verdict in the Ayodhya matter.
"The country wants to know how much respect these very political parties have got towards the Supreme
Court in this context."
He said the RSS expected the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and Opposition parties to take
up the issue for discussion in the House in the current Parliament session and "let the people of the
country know where lies the commitment of respective parties - in larger national integration or in narrow
communal vote bank politics."
An elated Acharya Giriraj Kishore, senior vice-president of VHP, welcomed the apex court's observation
and asked the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government to immediately implement it.
Asked about the Muslim League's reaction that Supreme Court had no right to interfere in religious
matters, he asked, "What is Ayodhya? It is also a matter of faith for us but they (Muslims) want us to
abide by court verdict."
"If they cannot accept a common civil code, why don't they follow their own criminal code as well, which
have harsher provisions ? Kishore asked.
