Kancheepuram: The Sankaracharya of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi, on July 24 welcomed the Supreme Court's suggestion to Parliament to frame a common civil code for the entire country to help the cause of national integration.

Speaking about the connections the mutt had with Ayodhya, the seer said Ayodhya was always linked to Kanchi, along with Mathura and seven other holy cities of Hindus.

There was a holy man called Ali Miyan from Kanpur who had visited the Kanchi mutt a few times when Mahaswami Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi lived, the seer said, adding "Our interests in Ayodhya dates from that period."

Representatives from Kanchi along with citizens of Ayodhya had set up many skill-development camps in the past in Ayodhya under a trust called Kanchi-Ayodhya Nagara Development Trust and many Hindus and Muslims of Ayodhya benefit from it.

On the setback to his efforts in finding a solution to the Ayodhya issue, the seer said, "There is no defeat to any good efforts. One gets up and makes further efforts. Courts can only give directives, agreements must be reached only among individuals."

There was no problem now and what was needed was change of heart on both sides and a greater understanding of the issue in journalists, who tended to confuse things sometimes, the Sankaracharya said.
