Nalbari (Assam): At least 55 people have died of diarrhoea, dysentery and malaria in lower Assam's
flood affected Nalbari district during the last couple of months, official sources said.
Four people, including a village headman, died of diarrhoea during the last three days taking the toll
upto 30.
Joint director of health services Dr Khagendra Nath Sarma said with slight improvement in the flood
scene, water borne diseases had taken an epidemic form particularly in Borkhetri revenue circle's
riverine areas.
Meanwhile, disciplinary action has been initiated against six doctors in the district for negligence of duty
at a time when the situation is alarming due to outbreak of diseases.
Most of the people are suffering, particularly in the remote villages due to lack of safe drinking water
facilities, as they have no other option but to drink the polluted river water.
