RSS for debate on Uniform Civil Code in Parliament
Tuesday, July 29 2003 22:42 Hrs (IST)
Kochi: The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) on July 29 appealed to the Centre to initiate
discussion on the Uniform Civil Code in Parliament straightaway as it was now in session.
"Let the country come to know which party stands where with respect to National Integration. Whether
they want National Integration or they want to continue with vote-bank politics. Let the parties make their
stand clear," RSS spokesman Ram Madhav told a meet-the-press programme.
It was not the first time that the Supreme Court had made an observation favouring implementation of a
uniform civil code. The apex court had gone to the extent of saying the code was needed if not for any
other purpose, at least for national integration, he said.
Pointing out that many eminent Indian leaders had also suggested such a code, he said government
should take these views seriously and since Parliament was in session, it should initiate discussion on
the issue in Parliament straightaway.
Welcoming India's efforts for good neighbourly relations with China and Pakistan, he however, said a
great amount of caution was required while dealing with the two countries.
He alleged that China was still continuing with its old policy of keeping the border tension alive, citing the
recent statement made by Chinese foreign ministry, where it said that it did not recognise Arunachal
Pradesh as part of India.
