Mayawati withdraws demand, Jagmohan crisis blows over
Tuesday, July 29 2003 21:00 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi/Lucknow: A 24-hour crisis in Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP)-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) coalition triggered by the demand for dismissal of Union Tourism Minister Jagmohan blew over on July 29 with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati withdrawing it but not before Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee rejecting it and BJP MPs favouring immediate withdrawal of support to her government.

On a day of dramatic developments following her demand that Jagmohan be sacked for "misleading" the nation on the Taj Heritage Corridor Project in "connivance" with her political rivals, the BSP members stalled Lok Sabha and got it adjourned for the day without any business setting the stage for a confrontation leaving a bitter trail on both sides.

But equally dramatically Mayawati appeared at a press conference in Lucknow in the evening to announce she was "withdrawing" her demand following assurances from the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani that her complaints into the Taj project would be looked into. She said differences between the two parties would be sorted out and maintained that they would fight the Lok Sabha elections together in UP.

With trouble clouding the BJP-BSP coalition, Vajpayee addressed the BJP Parliamentary Party meeting taking the earliest opportunity to reject the demand. "I have confidence in Jagmohan and there is no question of his dismissal", Vajpayee said.

He also referred to his telephonic talk with Mayawati and said he had advised her not to get her party rake up the issue in Parliament.

Unmindful of the Prime Minister's advice, the BSP MPs rocked proceedings in Lok Sabha rushing to the well of the House with "dismiss Jagmohan" chant that forced the speaker to adjourn the House for the day.

In between feelings ran high in the BJP with about 20 MPs meeting Vajpayee to press for withdrawal of support to the Mayawati government. In the Parliamentary Party meeting also the MPs made a similar demand.

While senior BJP leader Kalraj Mishra met Vajpayee in Delhi, BJP Legislator party leader in UP Lalji Tandon called on Governor Vishnukant Shastri to discuss the situation. BJP President M Venkaiah Naidu met his party's general secretaries and convened a meeting of the Parliamentary Board on July 30 to assess the situation.

Naidu and other BJP leaders were also slated to meet Prime Minister to discuss the issue.

Mayawati said she would meet Vajpayee and Advani in New Delhi to discuss the Taj issue.
