Witnesses from Kalupur depose before Godhra panel
Wednesday, July 30 2003 05:43 Hrs (IST)

Ahmedabad: Several post-Godhra riot witnesses of majority community from the sensitive Kalupur area of the walled city on July 30 deposed before the two-man inquiry commission, complaining about 'false' arrests of youths and alleging that "Muslims had grouped for violence following provocative announcements on loudspeakers from the mosques".

The witnesses, in their deposition before Justice (retd) G T Nanavati and Justice (retd) K G Shah also said the Muslim mobs from neighbouring localities were regularly on the rampage and threw crude bombs on their houses in spite of which Hindu youths were arrested on many occasions on 'false charges.'

"Muslims used to group for violence after announcements made on loudspeaker, especially following the afternoon prayer on Friday," alleged a witness Champaben Naik, a resident of Juna Mahajanwad locality dominated by majority community.

"The loudspeaker kept on saying 'Islam khatre mein hai (Islam is in danger) and 'Hindu ko kaat daalo..Maar daalo (cut the Hindus and kill them)," she told the panel.

Naik further claimed that a youth Dilip Sonpura had lost an eye when a crude bomb was thrown into his house but the police had wrongly registered a case against him.

Sonpura was present during the proceedings today.
