Naxalites attack police station in Orissa
Thursday, July 31 2003 14:11 Hrs (IST)

Bhubaneswar: Hours after killing 10 policemen in a landmine blast near Baizingwada, armed naxalites attacked the Motu police station in Malkangiri district on July 31 night, official sources said.

The reports said an unspecified number of armed Peoples' War (PW) activists opened fire on the police station from a distance, but the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawans and armed police returned the fire.

While the ultras fired about five rounds, the policemen fired 20 rounds, the superintendent of police, S Debdutt Singh said.

There was no report of any injury on either side. The ultras retreated after sometime as the police strongly repulsed the attempt.

Motu is located about one km from Orissa's border with Chattisgarh.

The naxalites had ambushed two police vehicles earlier in the afternoon when 10 policemen including five CRPF jawans died in the landmine explosion.

Singh said combing operations were continuing in the site of the explosion and its neighbourhood to nab the ultras.
