New Delhi: Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee had made no mention of any compromise on Jammu and
Kashmir during his recent visit abroad, Minister of State for
External Affairs Digvijay Singh clarified in Rajya Sabha on July 31.
Singh said an emphatic no to a question raised by senior Congress member K Natwar Singh who asked
whether the Prime Minister is reported to have said India will have to make some compromise on Jammu
and Kashmir.
In a written answer, Digvijay Singh said during his visit to Germany, the Prime Minister spoke of his
peace initiative and had emphasised that while "we have taken some steps, we will be willing to take
more steps if there is a matching response from Pakistan".
A right environment had to be created for a dialogue, the Prime Minister said.
"There was no mention of any compromise on Jammu and Kashmir," Singh said.
The minister said government's position on Jammu and Kashmir that the state was an integral part of
India and a part of its territory was under illegal occupation by Pakistan was consistent and principled.
