'India faces no threat to its borders from China'
Tuesday, July 1 2003 19:08 Hrs (IST)
Ambala: Defence Minister George Fernandes on August 1 asserted India faced no threat to its borders
from China and insisted Beijing's recent comments on Arunachal Pradesh were in line with that position
for the last 50 years.
"Nothing new. This has been China's position for the last 50 years," he told reporters in Ambala when
referred to recent comments from China that Arunachal Pradesh was not part of India.
He noted that there was "no change" in Chinese "attitude on certain border areas".
Asked whether India's borders were threatened in view of the Chinese claim, Fernandes said, "our
borders are not threatened".
Queried whether India was in a position to meet China's might unlike in the 1962 war, he shot back "we
don't want to discuss 1962".
On the suicide attacks by terrorists on security forces' installations, the Defence Minister said lessons
had been learnt and corrective steps were being taken wherever needed.
