Modi to abide by SC verdict on Best Bakery case
Saturday, August 2 2003 19:17 Hrs (IST)

Coimbatore: The Supreme Court's verdict on the controversial Best Bakery case will be final and abided by the Gujarat government, the state's Chief Minister Narendra Modi said on August 02.

Talking to reporters after a closed door meeting with Acharya Sri Jayendra Saraswathi and Vijayendra Saraswathi at the Kanchi Mutt, Modi said his government would file its counter-affidavit within a month after consulting legal experts.

''We sought 60 days time to file the counter...30 days have gone and we will file the counter within the next 30 days,'' he said.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) had expressed concern over the June 27 acquittal of 21 accused in the case by a fast track court presided over by Justice H U Mahida, and had appealed to the Supreme Court to order a re-trial by a competent court outside Gujarat.

"I am free to go anywhere in the country," said Modi after some of the political leaders and parties questioned his visit to Coimbatore.

"I have heard that some political leaders and parties have said that I should not have come here. But if an Italian born lady can move freely in the country then is it not ridiculous. Five crore Gujarati people have given me the mandate. My government is for five crore Gujarati people, of the five crore Gujarati people and by the five crore Gujarati people," said, Modi, while addressing a press conference in Coimbatore.

"Common Civil Code should be brought. And we are in favour of it", added Modi while addressing a well- attended rally. Modi's visit to the city, amid threats from fundamentalist organisations, passed off peacefully.

An unprecedented security blanket was thrown around, especially over the VOC park grounds, where he addressed a public meeting, organised by the state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as part of its rath yatra.

Tension built up over the visit after Al-Umma activists, who faced trial in the Coimbatore serial blasts case, threatened revenge on Modi for Gujarat riots.

Modi is visiting Coimbatore as part of a "Rathyatra" being undertaken by the Tamil Nadu BJP president C P Radhakrishnan.
