Nepal's parties reject Maoists' demand on talks
Saturday, August 2 2003 14:07 Hrs (IST)
Kathmandu: Nepal's mainstream political parties agitating against the king and demanding restoration of
Parliament today on August 2 rejected the Maoists' demand for their participation in the third round of
peace talks, saying parleys with a "illegitimate and reactionary government" were not possible.
"Tripartite talks in the presence of this illegitimate and reactionary government are not possible,"
standing committee member of Communist Party of Nepal-United Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML) Yubraj
Gyawali said.
"We cannot sit for a dialogue hosted by this government and we don't believe that the dialogue between
the present government and the Maoists can resolve the problem," he said and pointed out that the past
six months of the peace negotiations failed to achieve the goal.
"We are not against the peace process and we want the talks to conclude successfully to establish
lasting peace in the country, but in order to involve political parties in the peace negotiations an all party
government must be formed," Gyawali said.
Only an all-party government is capable of holding successful talks with the Maoists and lead to a
forward-looking political outlet to the present problem, he added.
