Bangalore: India made history in its military avionics when its multi-role Light Combat Aircraft
(LCA), 'Tejas', flew at supersonic speed flawlessly, making it the first Indian built fighter aircraft to do
so.
Chased by a Mirage-2000 and a Mig-21, Tejas crossed the sound barrier and flew at the supersonic
speed for 10 seconds during a 35-minute sortie in the overcast Bangalore skies on August 1.
"She flew absolutely beautifully. Even if you close my eyes, you could feel it has gone supersonic," said
the pilot Wing WDR Vikram Singh with 3,000 hours of flying experience, describing it as "an absolutely
flawless flight."
Tejas, LCA Technology Demonstrator (TD-1), flew beyond Mach 1 and reached a speed of Mach 1.08
at an altitude of 11 kms during the supersonic dash, Dr V K Aatre, Scientific Adviser to the Defence
Minister, said after witnessing the flight.
