Dual citizenship law by year-end: Advani
Sunday, August 3 2003 10:43 Hrs (IST)

Pune: Deputy Prime Minister Lal Krishna Advani said that the dual citizenship Bill would become a law before the end of this year.

Advani said this during an interactive session at the Symbiosis Society, when a student asked him as to whether the proposed dual citizenship plan of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government would help prevent the ongoing brain drain.

The Bill, which would empower persons of Indian origin currently residing in another country, with an Indian citizenship, was introduced to Parliament in May 2003. The seven countries identified by the government are UK, US, Canada, Australia, Finland, Ireland, Italy and Netherlands.

He said Indians living abroad would get Indian citizenships as well as of their adopted country.

Replying to a question on "brain drain", he said, "people do not bother about it these days." "There are many appointments taking place now in the country," he said and added "people seeking education abroad are now coming back to India."
